Christmas Newsletter 2017 - Year in Review

I asked Alex what I should include in our yearly family Christmas letter, and he suggested that I copy and paste last year's letter and just change the kids' ages. That would almost work--it's been a good and busy year, full of everyday struggles and God's graces, new every morning--but no major life changes (unless you count a new minivan and painting 1/3 of our house). And also no regular updates here on the blog (sorry! Instagram is just so much easier).

But here's a little bit about 2017...

Colette turned two in November. She loves being outside, taking care of her baby dolls, and playing trains with her brothers. She has become very good at dressing herself, and she will often disappear upstairs (whether or not the baby gate is in place) to change into her pajamas or put on a new pair of socks.

Just this month she started climbing out of her crib every time we put her in it, so now she's in a toddler bed (much to my dismay--I was not ready for her to be escaping her crib!).

John Paul is three and a half. He is extremely friendly and always happy--except for when he's not. He reminds us all to laugh more, and sets a strong example with his own hearty guffaw. He also excels at providing opportunities for all of us to practice laughing.

His favorite color is green. When he grows up, he wants to be either a fire fighter or a zoo keeper.

Liam also has exceptional taste in costumes

Liam turned five in November. We started kindergarten at home this year, and he's loving it. He says his favorite parts are snacks and vacations (and he asks at least weekly when we can go on another road trip), but he also seems to enjoy reading and math.

He is our resident train expert, always ready to describe in detail the various trains he has seen in books or (better yet!) in person.

Trains are proving to be a great motivation for school--he's always happy to sit quietly with pencil and paper so long as he can draw trains in the margins of his handwriting worksheet or Bible story illustration, and in addition to his name he can write many important words like "train" and "engine." He wants to be a--you guessed it--train engineer some day.

Michael will be seven in January. He would like you to know that he can run very fast and that his favorite subject is math (he's in 2nd grade). He still reads voraciously, and he is usually very willing to sit down and read a book or two to his siblings. His favorite books are Hardy Boys and the Magic Tree House books.

this was not staged!

He loves jokes and riddles, writing and illustrating stories, and building elaborate Lego and Lincoln Log houses.

He's not willing to commit himself to a particular career path at the time of this writing, but in recent weeks he's expressed plans to play for the Rockies and be a chef.

mining engines in Lead, SD -- one of the highlights of the summer
We had a busy summer with multiple road trips to visit family and friends we don't see nearly often enough. In between trips we fulfilled our four-year-long dream of painting the entire first floor of our house (replacing yellow, brown, and green with grey). We almost finished it--we intended to completely redo the small bathroom on the main floor, but the end of summer and then a leaky toilet upstairs slowed us down. Family New Year's Resolution: finish all of the mostly-done projects both in- and outdoors!

Alex is still teaching Scripture to high school sophomores at Regis Jesuit Girls' Division. I continue to write for the Augustine Institute and teach for the Denver Catholic Biblical and Catechetical Schools.

Homeschooling in addition to this craziness is made possible by the generous help of my parents, who are still living with us (much to our delight and relief!).

We wish you all peace and joy in these seasons of Advent and Christmas, and God's abundant blessings in the New Year!

"Man’s Maker was made man that
the Bread might be hungry,
the Fountain thirst,
the Light sleep,
the Way be tired from the journey,
the Truth might be accused by false witnesses,
the Judge of the living and dead be judged by a mortal judge,
Justice be sentenced by the unjust,
the Teacher be beaten with whips,
the Vine be crowned with thorns,
the Foundation be suspended on wood,
the Strength be made weak,
the Healer be wounded,
and that Life might die.
Wake up, O human being!
For it was for you that God was made man.
Rise up and realize it was all for you."

Merry Christmas

On this feast of Epiphany, we continue to wish all our family and friends a very Merry Christmas!

I cannot put into words how thankful I am that the Church celebrates a whole season of Christmas and not just one day. And not just because it means that this video and these pictures aren't late :)

We took a video of Michael and Liam wishing you a Merry Christmas (Merry Krik-kras, in Liam's case).

Merry Christmas from Ashley Crane on Vimeo.

And we attempted to take pictures of the boys*

Liam is more interested in cuddling than the camera

Brotherly love

Look! A Daddy!

As good as it's going to get without us being late to Mass

Wait! We had hats last year! I need a shot with hats!

Maybe Michael needs a bigger hat...

John Paul is so done with this.

*Full disclosure: We just did the video on Christmas day--I decided we didn't need to torture everyone to try to get a family shot or a shot of the boys. Then I look at last year's picture of Michael and Liam and started kicking myself for failing to get a picture this year. So the boys wore their Christmas outfits to Mass again this morning so I could make up for last week's parenting fail.

Oh no! I want my Christmas back!

That's what Michael kept saying as we were putting away all the Christmas decorations earlier this week, and I have to confess that I kind of agree with him.  I just wasn't ready for Christmas to be over this year.  I don't know what it was... I'm never ready for the Christmas break to be over, but most years I'm pretty much ready to put away the decorations and turn off the music once the inevitable reality of the post-holiday routine hits.  Not this year!

Michael even went so far as to try to pack himself away with the decorations...
Maybe it was because I had an unusually fruitful Advent... maybe it was because this was the first year we decorated our very own HOUSE... maybe it was because Michael was so into Advent and Christmas this year, especially with singing (but unfortunately all attempts to capture his renditions of "Deck the Halls" and "Jingle Bells" on video failed).  Who knows?  All I know is that if Alex hadn't taken the initiative and started boxing everything up on Tuesday I probably would've left the decorations up until Lent.  Or longer, considering our due date is just one week after Ash Wednesday.

Yesterday I found the Baby Jesus from the boys' Little People nativity set under the ottoman in the living room.  I suppose it's possible that the whole situation was entirely innocent, but I think it's at least as likely--if not more so--that Michael hid little bits of Christmas all over the house in an attempt to keep us from packing them all away.  I can't say I blame him, but we might be making these little discoveries up until next Advent...

So our Christmas decorations are put away; the outside lights are still up but we're not turning them on any more (*tear*); and I'm (mostly) not singing Christmas carols for lullabies.  When Michael asks for "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" at nap time I just don't have the heart (or energy) to explain that I can't sing that because it's not Christmas any more.  And besides, we've spent the last year singing "Up on the Housetop" and "Old Toy Trains" almost every single naptime/bedtime because he got so attached to them last Christmas.  So a little variety is nothing about which to complain.

Christmas joy--at least we don't have to pack these up until next Advent!

Bye bye, Christmas break

Our lovely Christmas break officially ended when Alex's alarm went off at 5am Monday morning.  *sigh*  How many months till summer?

My encouragement during this transition back to changing diapers and reading Thomas books solo has been (trying to) meditate on the following:

"For each of us has been created to praise, reverence, and serve God
and by this means to save our souls and help in the salvation of others.
No action, however insignificant, if accepted and performed as from God's hand
and in conformity with his will, is anything other than redemptive
and a sharing in the great work of salvation begun by Christ's passion...
The work of the kingdom, the work of laboring and suffering with Christ,
is no more spectacular for the most part than the routine of daily living."
- Fr. Walter Ciszek, S.J.

While I continue to try to remind myself that changing epic diapers and doing the resulting load(s) of laundry are a sharing in the redemptive work of Christ, here's how we spent our break:

Extra bedtime stories and extra snuggles

Shoveling and playing in the snow

Decorating and eating Christmas cookies

Watching lots of Backyardigans with our cousins

And napping and reading

There and Back Again: A Christmas Tale by Michael Underfoot

Concerning Michael
I like to be in the center of the action - which often leads me to the kitchen where all the adults are gathered - so my Papa and Uncles started calling me "Michael Underfoot."  I can claim connections with two important families of the Shire/Breeland: the Proudfoots and the Underhills.

Chapter 1: Feast of St. Nicholas
To celebrate the feast of St. Nicholas on December 6th we shared our stocking gifts.  Daddy had to open mine - I wasn't quite sure what my crazy parents were trying to get me to do.  But once I discovered the rainbow goldfish I was very happy!

Chapter 2: Lincoln
I was SO excited to go see Grandma and Grandpa in Lincoln that I tried to ship myself there a little early.  It didn't work, so I had to wait until Mama and Daddy were done with work and we could all drive out together.

Grandma and Grandpa have some great toys.  One of my favorites was this shape-sorter - and they even let me take it home with me!  I love putting all the shapes in (with a little bit of help so I know where they go) over and over (and over and over and over...).  Sometimes after the fourth or fifth time in a row I Mama distracts me and then it disappears... I think she hides it so she can have a break.

Another favorite toy was the doorstop.  Nobody minded when I played with it, but they didn't seem to approve when I tried to eat it.  Grandpa caught me here...

The Christmas donkey tasted almost as good as the doorstop.

I spent a lot of time in baby-jail (as opposed to puppy-jail, which was on the other side of the gate).  I don't know why - the stairs were very fun.

The dishwasher had the best buttons!

Sometimes I crack myself up.

Chapter 3: Aunt Dene' & Uncle Tyler

I got in some quality time with Uncle Ty watching the many (many, many) bowl games.  He's such a great uncle - he even let me have the remote (after he disabled it... but I just wanted to press buttons, I didn't care if the buttons did anything!).

I also got some great cuddles and playtime with Aunt Dene'.  She is SO much fun!

I also had a lot of fun playing with Aunt Dene' & Uncle Ty's dog, Frannie.  She was great to play with, until she decided to lick my face - I'm not such a fan of having my face licked.

Chapter 4: Grandma and Grandpa
It was wonderful to spend so much time with Grandma and Grandpa.  They sure love me an awful lot!!!

Grandpa took me outside and helped me climb the big tree.

I taught Grandpa how to play cards.  This is one of my favorite games!

I love my Grandma!

Especially when she feeds me lunch!

Chapter 5: Christmas!
This was the best Christmas EVER!  Okay, so it was my only Christmas ever, but even so it was pretty awesome.

Grandma made me an amazing stocking (and it was easier to get stuff out of it this time around).

Grandma and Grandpa also got me a super cool firetruck.

But in all honesty the best part about presents was the ribbon.  I just know someone was waiting to steal my ribbon - but I wasn't going to let that happen!

Can't you see how cool this stuff is?!

The End.
